This Isn’t the Highlight Reel

Every lifestyle site on the internet promises the same thing: “freedom, excitement, open communication, stronger relationships, and endless fun with attractive, like-minded people.” It reads like a timeshare pitch translated by somebody who’s never actually been to Cancun, and it’s not wrong exactly, it’s just missing about ninety percent of what actually happens on an ordinary Tuesday night when somebody’s feelings get hurt over a text that took too long to answer.

We’re a couple in our early to mid fifties, though we don’t look it (we checked), and we’ve been fully active in this world since 2016. Before that we flirted with the idea for the better part of fifteen years, the way you flirt with quitting a job you hate: a lot of talk, a few false starts, and one drink too many at somebody’s wedding before anything actually changed. So yeah, fifteen years of circling an idea before we finally did something about it.

This blog exists because nobody wrote the version we needed back when we were still circling instead of committing. Everyone will sell you the fantasy. So why bother bringing the mess into it? Because almost nobody sits you down and explains what it actually costs in jealousy, insecurity, ego, and the occasional full-blown argument in a hotel parking lot at midnight. I’m not interested in selling anything here. I’m interested in telling the truth, because the truth is usually more useful than the brochure.

Maybe you’re brand new to all this, still trying to figure out whether it’s a scam, a fantasy, or something two reasonably sane adults could actually pull off. Some of you have been circling the idea the way we did for over a decade, close enough to smell it and not quite ready to touch it. And a few of you have already been doing this long enough to know exactly what I’m talking about, the kind of recognition that hits like Rick Dalton pointing at his own TV screen, unable to believe what he’s watching. Read something here, feel your hand start to lift toward the screen, and I reckon this blog is doing its job.

I’m not going to unload every story in one post. The full origin story, how two people who spent a decade talking themselves out of this finally talked themselves into it, gets its own post down the road. So do the specific nights that went sideways: the jealousy that showed up uninvited, the boundary that got walked over before anyone noticed, the fight in the car on the drive home that had nothing to do with anyone but us. Those stories are coming. This one is just the introduction, the part where I tell you what kind of place you’ve wandered into before I start handing you the receipts.

One thing this blog is not: erotica. If that’s what you’re after, there are better-lit corners of the internet for it. What you’ll get instead is the unglamorous middle of the story, the part where ordinary people bring their actual marriages, actual egos, and actual insecurities into a world that gets marketed like a vacation brochure. No shaming, not of the lifestyle and not of anyone in it, ourselves included most of all.

We didn’t start this because we figured it all out. We started it because we didn’t, and we’re pretty sure we’re not the only ones. Welcome to the parts nobody puts in the brochure.
